I worked for an entire academic year in an Autistic school, this work was completed as part of my studies. It involved over 800 hours of unpaid work, working with individuals who presented complex behavioural challenges. I also worked in the after-school, Easter and summer clubs on a paid basis. My time in the school was extremely enjoyable. I met many amazing people amongst the staff and children there. I privately tutored a young man who has Autistic Spectrum Disorder and Attention deficit disorder. I taught him Literacy and Numeracy for over two years. This was also on a voluntary basis. I have worked as a support worker with individuals with various disabilities and needs, for over two years, as of March 2020. Two of my family members are on the Autistic spectrum. They are happy for me to mention this, without getting into too much specific information. I have spent my entire life around them, which has given me a unique insight into the behaviours and hobbies they enjoy.
What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? *: Acknowledging their independence. I adopt the mentality of never patronising, but will intervene when necessary. A persons right to express themselves is critical. Being respectful of service users experiences and views. Implementing positive strategies which will help improve a persons quality of life. Certain skills, such as communication and body language are very important. Respecting service users and families wishes. Such as their right to confidentiality.
How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? *: I have a range of experiences, both professional and personal. Which I implement in my work to ensure the service users needs are met. First priority is to meet the needs of the service user. Then to look at outcomes in scenarios, such a as socialising. I would then use my professional skills to ensure the service user has an enjoyable time. Being mindful of behavioural triggers. anyone can have a range of dislikes, so it is important that I am mindful of what could cause the service user distress. I have become adept at preventing situations from arising, through risk assessment. Acknowledging the individual rather than the job. I like to get to know people I interact with frequently. So I try my best to get to understand the person Im working with, rather than paying minimum attention.
What is it about PA work which appeals to you? *: Enabling individuals to flourish in life. I believe if youre not helping other people in life, youre wasting your time. The rewarding feeling of support/personal work is an amazing feeling. Its the most enjoyable type of work Ive done.
