My work involved providing care and support for adults of all ages with all kinds of special needs. My specific duties depend on the abilities of the clients I am looking after. It might mean helping with washing and dressing, assisting at mealtimes, helping those who cannot feed themselves, supporting with toileting, supporting them through day-to-day life, education, community involvement, social activities, and dispensing medication. 2014-present-Health Care Assistant for Elysium Healthcare Assisting qualified staff with the assessment and implementation of the individual patient care plan. Understanding routine tasks and activities as directed to facilitate the well-being, dignity, and treatment of all patients. Observing and monitoring the well-being of patients ensuring that any unusual physical, mental or emotional occurrences are promptly referred to senior staff/the primary nurse and documented as appropriate. Responding promptly and courteously to requests and enquiries. Developing and maintaining a good professional relationship with patients and colleagues
What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? *: Patience, communication skills, caring, compassionate, empathy, calm, humorous and easygoing, creative. I have the ability to adapt to any caring situation I might find myself in, the experience to know what is urgent and what can wait, the initiative to be proactive, common sense to know my limitations and ask for help when I need it.
How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? *: Teaching new skills and working towards independence is important for a disabled person. Supporting and promoting their day-to-day tasks such as aiding personal hygiene, helping with dressing, encouraging to prepare meals. I would aid everyday activities such as shopping, hobbies and socialising.
