I am currently volunteering with Communities for Work providing support for vulnerable adults to attend outdoor activities. These adults have multi and complex barriers. I offer support and encouragement throughout the activities. I also offer a listening ear for when they need to talk about things. I adhere to MTCBC confidentiality policy.
It is lovely to see the positive changes the adults undergo, initially when they attend, they are very nervous and anxious however by the end of their time with the project they have a more positive outlook on life. They have grown in confidence and feel ready to take the next step forward.

I previously worked for Pots of Love within Merthyr Town centre where I gained experience in flower arranging. I make my own flower displays for house.

I support my son to make complete various craft activities for son. I have made a bat in a cage, a Tudor house, a musical instrument.

For four years I was a fundraiser for various charities. I liaised with the local Leisure Trust to organise and facilitate various events to raise money. Events such as sponsored walks, raffles, bouncy castles, face painting and fund days.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person?

When working with a disabled person I think it is important to listen to them, to be calm, resilient and patient.
I also believe having excellent personal and interpersonal communication skills are important. Offering support and encourage is also key

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person?

I believe I have the experience and level of understanding of the complex needs a disable person may have. I always offer encouragement and support to individuals to promote their independence. I actively listen to individuals and move forward with what they want to undertake.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you?

I enjoy supporting individuals to move forward with their life, whether it’s being able to complete an outdoor activities course or just being able to be with a group of people.
