I have been employed as a PA by Caerphilly for over 4 years. Previously within this role I have worked with children and adults, all of whom has additional needs including ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, physical disabilities and complex health problems or issues. I have also been employed as a relief worker for a mental health charity where I provided personal care and social support to a variety of individuals who all had diagnosis of a mental health condition and other additional needs. I have also previously volunteered at charities and organisations/groups for individuals with additional needs and mental health conditions. Recently I have volunteered at a Food Co-op run for and by adults who have additional needs, I help support anyone there by organising the craft and art table during the session. Previously I have also volunteered at a childrens centre for children with complex additional needs and life-limiting conditions, I would be involved in the play and sensory area and support staff during my time there. What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? *: I believe it is important to be an independent and confident individual who is able to communicate well with the individual they are working with, ultimately allow the individual to feel safe and supported during the time of working together. This allows the individual to use and develop their skills at home and within the community safely. It is important to be understanding and patient as each task can come with its own challenges and as a PA you should have the experience and knowledge of being able to over come these challenges without causing distress to the individual. How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? *: I am a confident and independent young woman who has been fortunate to experience lots of different opportunities and individuals, I believe I would be able to help develop the individuals skills as I have done this previously within my other PA and carer roles. I am a patient and adaptable person who cares about promoting the Independence of individuals who are disabled and allowing individuals to have opportunities and experiences that they will bring them enjoyment and enrichment. What is it about PA work which appeals to you? *: Throughout my time working as a PA I feel proud and satisfied when I am able to support someone in tasks that once brought them fear or distress. Seeing an individual gain confidence and skills is hugely rewarding for myself. What are your hobbies/interests?: My main hobby is horses, from a young age I have had horses. I enjoy spending time outdoors with my horses and walking my dog. I also love going to the gym, swimming and going to the cinema. I enjoy all types of films and music, I also like reading and learning new art/crafting ideas.
