I currently work as a trainee coordinator with young people that are not in education or employment. My role involves running budgeting workshops and supporting them to reach their desired goals in life, many of my trainees have a range of disabilities - for each one i make adjustments on learning and planning techniques to ensure they fully understand and are comfortable with what they are being supported to do. On a personal note, my children (twins) have a very good friend who has autism - he likes to come to our house after school when possible, due to his autism he does not like change so we make sure we keep to the same routine and if anything needs to change we inform him and mum as soon as possible, to reduce the risk of him becoming upset.


What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? *: To be non-judgemental, you need to get to know the person and earn their trust (having a stranger come into your home can be very upsetting for some) Don’t assume, get to know the individual - what they like, what they don’t like, find out how you can support them to make life easier/better. Always be open and honest, listen to the individual (don’t give advice they don’t want to hear) be calm, patient, caring and have the motivation to help them succeed in the goals they would like to reach. Respect their privacy, abide by GDPR and work in a professional manner, whilst always ensuring you are protecting their confidentiality.


How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? *: By supporting them to reach their goals.


What is it about PA work which appeals to you? *: I enjoy supporting individuals to reach their goals and become more independent.
