What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person?

As a care worker in the community already I have gained a number of skills. Good listening is always a key part in ensuring that the service users needs are always met. This is vital in the home environment as it makes them feel empowered. Having a good demeanour can make a thousand words and often smiling and encouraging kind words can make the service user feel as ease. Showing kindness and willingness is all aspects of the given task will ensure that the service user has a good quality life. Taking responsibility by making sure all work is completed to a satisfactory standard.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person?

I am a hard working, reliable young gentleman. I always encourage a good atmosphere. I have a good set of knowledgeable skills which I have gained from working in different care sectors. Promoting independence is key to a happy service user and helps with social and healthy mental wellbeing. Promoting independence can also speed recovery. Ensuring the service user is at the centre of all their care, including them in all daily living tasks and activities is vital to promoting independence.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you?

As I already work in the community, and already have a service user with Dewis I think it would only be fair if I looked for more service users with Dewis as I have seen a few service users looking for P.A's. I find that one to one care is more beneficial to the service user as they feel more encouraged to be sociable and active as there wouldn't be the same environment as a care home or community care. example 20 service users to 5 staff, I feel that service users needs are not always met this way. Working as a P.A with Dewis for my service user on their own encourages them to get out more and include them socially, my service user also thinks its wonderful that I can have a good relationship with them as I have the time to get to know them better.

What are your hobbies/interests?

I enjoy sports, my favourite being football. I am into rugby and like to encourage a good sportsmanship when watching sports. I also enjoy playing pub sports such as darts and snooker, which I am also a member of the Cardiff snooker hall where I enjoy playing the game with another service user there. I like to go on bike rides and see beautiful scenery, my greatest achievement was climbing Pen-Y-Fan last year where the sights were unimaginable. I have a pet chameleon named Karma and a tortoise named Alan, I enjoy taking trips to animal sanctuary's.
