Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job. *: Im a serving Warrant Officer within the Army, currently c26 years service which has allowed me to develop key skills. Having a a 21 year old daughter with High Functioning Autism, gives me a good understanding of this condition and what it takes to gain an individuals confidence and build and maintain a routine.
What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? *: Patience above all is key.... there is an understanding that it can take all kinds of triggers dependant on the young persons mood, change of socks, weather conditions, change of routine etc Having attended a 6 week course on understanding Autism at Farnborough College was certainly a small addition to understanding and how to best help and assist my own daughter.
How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? *: Be patient, build trust whilst promoting the young persons confidence in gaining usable life skills.
What is it about PA work which appeals to you? *: An opportunity to make a small difference in the life of a young person. My daughter has a PA and the bond they have made over the many years has clearly made a difference in her life. I relish an opportunity to do the same where I can.
What are your hobbies/interests?: Although no a sporting gladiator these days, I do enjoy cycling, swimming (of which I am a qualified Halliwick Disability Swimming Instructor). This I do with the Rhondda Polar Bears Swimming Club every Thursday evening. I also love sports like football (favourite team is Liverpool) and Welsh Rugby.
