I most recently have been working as a Customer Service Assistant in a play centre. We regularly had older children and adults with additional needs attend special events such as our Santa mornings. Previously I have also volunteered in a project supporting adults with additonal needs and disabilities to access a outdoor learning programme. This would involve guiding individuals through activities and offering support when needed.
What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? *: I would say it is important to be a caring person that genuinely shows compassion. Someone who is reliable and punctual, keeping to their word and not letting anyone down. Someone who understands confidentiality. A fun and outgoing personality, being able to encourage social interaction and making sure nobody feels excluded or uncomfortable.
How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? *: I am a very outgoing and confident person and I will talk to anyone. In my previous employment I would ensure that our volunteers never felt awkward or uncomfortable by befriending them and supporting them when needed. I believe I could be an ecouraging friend that will help a person be more independent and encourage social interaction. I feel I would be a positive role model and help a person to achieve their goals whilst also recognising their limits and when they need support.
