Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job. *: Employment: 2005-2019 Barnardo’s Cymru: My roles within Barnardo’s have included Family Support Worker: supporting young families within their own homes, in groups and out in the community to promote independent family functioning and work towards reaching their potential. Family Group Conference co-ordinator: arranging and facilitating meetings for families this involves, liaising with family members, Social Workers and other agencies to bring families together to discuss and formulate their own plans, as a way of moving forward from existing issues. Within all my roles in Barnardo’s I have managed my own caseloads and it has been essential to use my own initiative, be able to work as part of a team, share information, communicate effectively, and with compassion, at all levels, whilst maintaining professional boundaries in a client centred approach. 2000-May 2005: Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust Family Health Worker: Supporting parents with preschool children in their own homes, in the community and in group settings. I managed my own caseload as part of a multi-disciplinary team supporting parents to promote their parenting skills, access services, build confidence and self-esteem both as parents and as individuals. The diversity of my role enabled me to learn to develop different ways of communicating, which included via interpreters and with or without the power of speech. In addition to the Family Health Worker role I organised and facilitated a sewing group for the parents of the locality. 1997-2000: Opportunity Housing Trust, Library Court, Fairoak Road, Cathays, Cardiff. Support Development Worker: Supporting adults with learning difficulties and physical disabilities in their own homes, as well as out in the community, to reach their potential as individuals. This involved supporting people to carry out everyday tasks and activities, such as personal care, socialising, household tasks, shopping, budgeting, education, participating in community activities and gaining employment. This support enables tenants to gain confidence, skills and knowledge necessary to promote their independence and live life to the full. During 90’s I trained as a Swimming Teacher & Official, enabling me to volunteer in this capacity at the local swimming club for ten years. This role involved teaching and coaching swimmers of all ages and abilities. What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? *: To be a good listener and have a friendly, calm manner whilst having the ability to communicate effectively and respect a persons views, needs, wants and ideas, . To promote independence, self-esteem, have respect for a persons individuality with an empathetic, person centred approach that can instil confidence and motivation in others.
How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? *: I believe in the ability and rights of each individual and have the optimism to encourage independence and aspirations, whilst respecting their thoughts and feelings. I have many years of experience of working in emotionally and physically challenging settings that have provided me with a great awareness of the need for confidentiality, safety, integrity and empathy for others. The support roles I have taken part in have enabled me to work with a variety of people, with different needs which have included all aspects of running a home, budgeting, attending social events, leisure facilities, swimming, educational facilities and encouraging to achieve their goals. Within my paid and voluntary work I have had excellent relationships with colleagues, clients and agencies, and demonstrated my ability to instil confidence and motivation in others. My pragmatic approach enables me to easily adapt to change and view things from different perspectives. I believe I have excellent communication skills, while being mindful of confidentiality and professional boundaries and consider myself to be a hardworking, reliable individual, who is always willing to learn.
What is it about PA work which appeals to you? *: I have always enjoyed working with people and feel I have a lot to give with regard to help, support and engaging in activities I thrive helping and supporting others, watching others enjoying life, getting the most out of it, progressing and achieving, and sometimes just relaxing.I consider myself to be a young at heart lady who enjoys working, who likes to keep herself busy and particularly enjoys interaction with others.
