My degree in Childhood and Youth Studies enabled me to gain the vital understanding, knowledge and experience when working with children and young people. For the past seven years I have supported children in secondary education and I currently work in a Super School (3-16 years). My role includes running well- being, social skills and literacy and numeracy interventions. My role also focuses on supporting individuals in the classroom with complex needs and disabilities.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person?

There are many important qualities that a personal assistant should possess when working with a disabled individual. Building a positive rapport and relationship with the individual is important with the understanding that this takes time and patience. Understanding the individuals needs and interests is vital to help the individual develop confidence and resilience. A personal assistant should be able to make decisions independently whilst also allowing the disabled person to make their own decisions. They must be able to work well with others and have a patient manner and a good sense of humour.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person?

My role as a progress coach enables me to support individuals and improve their confidence and general enjoyment of life. I am keen to pass my skills on to the disabled people I work with to enable them to get the most out of life. I am a calm and non- confrontational and enjoy all aspects of support work.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you?

I would like to further my experience and I am interested in working with young adults. I would like to be able to pass on my life experiences and enjoyments onto young disabled adults.

What are your hobbies/interests?

My interests include exercising throughout the week, swimming and socializing with my friends. I also enjoy arts and crafts and spending time with my family. I also love fashion and shopping.
