Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job

In my previous role, I was a Dementia Support/Liaison Worker with the Alzheimer's Society. I provided advice, support and guidance to people newly diagnosed with dementia and their family/caregivers and worked closely with other voluntarily services and the health sector on behalf of my service users. Throughout this time I developed a good understanding of confidentiality, data protection and the ability to deal with sensitive topics and conversations. I also have a BSc honours degree in Psychology which together with my previous role has provided me with a good academic and practical knowledge of a range of disabilities and mental health conditions.

I have experience of working with a variety of ages, including children and young adults, in a variety of settings. Whilst in university I was a mentor providing advice to comprehensive school aged children who had been deemed as 'vulnerable and problematic' to help them achieve in later life. This developed a strong sense of wanting to help people, especially those considered vulnerable with barriers to education and life in general. I also volunteered as a 'Buddy' for disabled young adults whilst in college where I helped plan and supervise different trips and learning activities for the people I 'buddied' with. This has given me a good understanding of working with a range of different ages and types of people, combined with children and young adults who have special educational needs and disabilities therefore I believe I would be a good fit for a range of different people.

I am good natured and would class myself as someone who is very approachable and friendly. I'd like to think I have a good sense of humour! I also enjoy a range of different activities and love to try new things so would thrive on the opportunity of getting to try different activities with someone. I believe strongly in inclusion and equality and believe everybody should have the opportunity to be the best they can be with whatever support necessary. I also believe strongly in being person centred and adapting care/support to the person you are supporting, not expecting them to tailor themselves to you as a PA/carer. Overall I feel I have the right nature and come from the right background to be an excellent PA and would welcome the opportunity to provide support and continue what I do best.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person?

Friendly, understanding, approachable and a good nature. The ability to be empathetic and person centred whilst maintaining a sense of equality and inclusion at all times. Non judgemental, open minded and overall kind with a desire to help someone reach their full potential and live their life how they want and to the best of their ability.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person?

In my previous role, I became acutely of the importance of promoting independence and not 'taking control' which I believe is a very important quality to remember as a PA. I always strive to lead with positively rather than judgement, for instance if the disabled person has fears or worries regarding different situations, feelings should always be validated and not looked over/minimised. I am someone who also realises the importance of inclusion, equality and the ability to access community/social life and would encourage this as much as possible.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you?

All my education and different voluntary/employment opportunities all have centred around education and health and social care. I am strongly drawn to the desire to help people live the best lives they can with whatever support is necessary. I feel there is no equivalent to the sense of reward you feel when you have done a good job for someone and truly feel like you have made a difference to their day to day life.

What are your hobbies/interests?

I enjoy a range of different activities. I enjoy learning and always strive to learn different information and new facts every day. I am an avid reader and given the opportunity could read 5 books a week! I also enjoy music, going to the cinema and concerts and like to spend as much time with my children as possible.
