Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job

I have held various supervisory roles during my working career with teams of staff under my leadership and care.

Over the last seven years, I have been a member of a church pastoral care team. This has involved fortnightly visits to a visually-impaired elderly gentleman in his warden assisted flat to chat. On a monthly basis, I would transport him to-and-from an afternoon tea event where he could socialise with others from the local community.

I was also worked with a paraplegic gentleman in his 50s, and his wife who was his main carer. Again the main purpose was to provide an additional opportunity to socialise, discussing shared interests including, sport and music.
Between 2000 and 2015 on a weekly basis, I visited two elderly family-friends in a nearby care home both of whom had very few visitors. They enjoyed engaging in conversations covering a wide range of topics.

While our two children were growing up, I took on the majority of domestic duties including the school-run, cooking meals, weekly shopping, and laundry, due to my wife’s work and study commitments at that time. I also had a full-time job. After the children left home, I continued many of the household tasks, supporting my wife in a high-pressure career.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person?

I think it is important to have a person-centred approach, being respectful and sensitive to a person’s wishes, and to enable them, rather than taking over and dominating. Additional qualities would include empathy, patience, diplomacy, friendly disposition and good listener, safety and welfare conscious, and a willingness to learn. Also having an interest in them as a person, and what is important to them.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person?

My wife and I have recently moved back to Wales after many years in Boston, Lincolnshire. I am not yet of retirement age, and feel that I would like to continue to work, and I am drawn to working with people in a caring role. I would enjoy sharing my own interests, which include ornithology, natural history, walking and horticulture with like-minded people. This would benefit me as I make new contacts in the community and explore the local area.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you?

I enjoy company and being of help to others and, having been tied to a commercial company for 40 hours plus per week for a long time, would appreciate the more flexible environment offered with this sort of work. It would also be a new challenge for me, one which I relish.

What are your hobbies/interests?

Ornithology and Natural History, Vegetable Growing, Cooking, most Sports involving a ball ( mostly following but when I was in Lincolnshire I was a member of a Walking Football team)
