I have supported adults with learning disabilities since the age of 20. I am now a registered service manager within a care organisation (Cartrefi Cymru). I have 18 years experience with has given me the opportunity to support adults with a variation of disabilities. I am a qualified Manual Handling Trainer with extensive knowledge in regards to the moving and correct support handling of people. I am still a very 'hands on' manager in regards to support with Personal care, eating and drinking assistance, medication administration.
I have a passion for my work and dedicated to supporting people to be as independent as they can be. I have a keen interest in people with acquired injuries that have affected their abilities as I enjoy the challenge of trying to unlock those hidden independent skills.
From reading the Gentleman's advert, I feel that we would work well together and hopefully would gain the trust of all those who care for him. I am a very open and friendly person and hope that I could make a difference her in some way.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person?

I have over 18 years of experience in this area. My key knowledge is that a person is a person firstly and a disability is an additional need. A person with any form of disability requires the same approach in regards to being Respected, Valued, Involved in their own community, Safeguarded and provided with the opportunity to enable themselves to be independent in ways that are achievable to them. Confidentiality is high priority for we whilst supporting someone and their families. The ability to engage with a person on a level of their understanding is essential to establish a good working environment.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person?

My primary focus is enabling someone to develop themselves in some way, however small. My work ethic has always been to promote independence. No better rewards than seeing that I have helped someone to do something for themselves.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you?

Alongside my full time employment this will not be stress to me. For the last 5 years I have been a PA to a young boy with autism and this has been a really special experience.

What are your hobbies/interests?

I love music from different genres, nature, different sports, DIY. The beach is my favourite place to be.
I have a keen interest in being around people that require some degree of my help.
I have 3 Shih tzu dogs and love spending time with them and my partner at home. I am a very open minded person with quite a good sense of humour.

Throughout the week my management role comprises of many meetings and a structure that would not allow me to be able to swap any planned shifts. However, should something come up then I would try my best to see if alternative arrangements be made.
