I have been working as a carer in the community for 3 years and really love what I do as it's extremely rewarding.

I am currently completing my QCF Level 2 in Health and Social Care.

I support service users in their own homes who have limited mobility, Dementia, Parkinson's, arthritis and who have had a stroke.

I am punctual, being late is not in my vocabulary.

I am trustworthy, have a good work ethic and reliable.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person?

Always be sensitive and understanding to the disabled person's needs and wants. Listen and think about what's being said and respond accordingly. Communication is very important between all parties involved in the person's care. It's important that information is shared so that all parties involved are kept up to date.

Always ask how the person likes things done and respect their wishes.

Encourage the person to be as independent as possible. Example's;
1) Encourage the person to wash and dress themselves with me being there to assist if the need arises
2) Giving the person options on what to do out in the community and allowing them to choose what they want to do.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person?

I believe in always being professional and treating people with respect and dignity. It's important to get to know the person you are caring for and to build a good working relationship.

I am compassionate and sensitive to people's needs.

I encourage the people I care for to be independent and to be part of the community as this helps with their general well-being. I take people out for shopping trips, going out for a meal or a coffee shop for tea and cake.

I always have a smile on my face and try to uplift the individual with conversation either about their family or things that make them happy.
