Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job

My previous employment was working in the Public & Private Sector as a HR Team Leader/Operations Lead in the Pension and Exit Management department. Primarily responsible for receiving and responding to missing information requests from 3rd party Civil Service Pension Provider, as well as managing a broad range of HR queries. I managed a team of up to 15 people which required building relationships based on trust; empathy; flexibility for individual needs. This required a good communication skills as well as reliability and commitment from my part.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person?

There would be a number of qualities which I have mentioned above reliability; flexibility; understanding individual needs and patience. Good communication is key as well as a good character. I believe that a good humour is required as and when appropriate. I have worked as a volunteer in a swimming club and it is important to build on the relationship especially around trust and empathy. Being non-judgemental is key to ensuring team work as well.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person?

Having worked in the environment of HR, I have knowledge of employment law which covers a disabled person. One of my team members was blind and I had to ensure all reasonable adjustments were adhered to. I more recently undertook the BSL Level 1 sign language course and I'm currently a volunteer for the Wales Council for Deaf People as a support group member meeting once a month. I've also recently undertaken a lip reading course over 10 weeks so I feel I have insight and can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you?

Job satisfaction and providing support for someone who is less able where I am an abled bodied person with 41 years of working in a Manufacturing and Public Sector environment which has allowed me to attained a number of key qualities and skills which I feel would be suited to a PA.

What are your hobbies/interests?

I enjoy a number of outdoor activities, walking and cycling amongst my most recent activities. As mentioned my most recent interest is learning sign language undertaking the Level 1 BSL in Pontypridd. I have attended a lip reading class. I have an allotment and involved in supporting the Allotment Society in promoting home grown produce.
I am currently a volunteer as a Panel Member for School Admissions and Exclusions for the Newport area. When requested I attend the Civic Centre in Newport Civic Centre to hear appeals.
I also set up a Craft Class which has been established since 2010 and has 12 members.
