Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job

In my previous employment I was a support worker for adults with autism and adhd. I would promote the independence of my residents and try to integrate them into the community.
I would often have to deal with challenging behaviour and would have to watch for triggers and reduce anxieties. I had to have a lot of patient and understanding of each resident so I would know fully how to help when anxieties did arise.
I would handle finances and administering medications throughout the day and ensure that all is being taken.
I had to follow routines and rituals and would take the residents to do preferred activities, for example, one of my residents loved long walked so we would travel anywhere possible so that they were able to go for new walks in different places and would walk for hours.

I also have a severely autistic brother who is only one year younger than myself so I have grown up alongside autism my whole life. My brother is my best friend and I am very involved in his day to day life and I am like another guardian to him alongside our mother.
Growing up with my brother he has taught me to always have patience and empathy and to have a better understanding of how someone with ASD may preserve the world. I take my brother out to do different activities such as the cinema, walks, swimming, going for meals out and shopping. Both my mother and I have worked very hard in promoting the independence of my brother so he is not so reliant on the both of us and have helped him from when he was a child and could not be in social situations to now enjoying being around different people and interacting with others.

I also worked in a nursery school and was a 1:1 support to a child who displayed challenging behaviour and worked very hard in building a rapport with the child and trying to get him interested in the work the teacher was providing by using new fun ways. I was then a 1:1 support to a child with physical difficulties who had to be monitored when eating and playing but was also not interested in interacting with other children and did not enjoy doing the exercise he had to do everyday, I came up with new ways to get him to participate and he became very social around other children and enjoyed doing what I asked of him.

I have undertaken various training courses such as ;
Health and safety
Fire safety
Manual handling
PBM practical and theory(Positive Behaviour Monitoring)
Autism
Food safety
POVA/Safeguarding (Protection of Vulnerable Adults)
Medication administration
First aid

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person?

As stated above I have grown up with autism so I have a vast understanding of ASD, I also have a lot of empathy when anxieties arise, as minuscule as the issue may seem I know that to the person themselves that it is important to them so you have to have compassion and show kindness.
I understand the importance of confidentiality from my previous employment and know that any personal information should not be relayed to anyone.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person?

I believe with my experience in employment and personal life I can help to promote independence and can become someone that they can trust.
I enjoy doing different activities so therefore would enjoy taking them out and taking them to enjoy new things so they can gain different experiences of different activities.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you?

I enjoy working with new people and enjoy helping to build their confidence. I very much enjoyed doing care work and working in a school environment with young children and adults, I was able to further understand ASD even more so than I did , I love working with others and getting to know their different routines and their personality traits.

What are your hobbies/interests?

Most of my hobbies include my brother in them as I try to spend as much time as I can with him, I enjoy physical exercise and reading different books.
I spend a lot of time with my family and friends, whether it may be going out for the day or going out for meals in the evening.
