1978-1982 Ferndale comprehensive school. Gained 4 cse,s in Maths, English, woodwork and metalwork. I also completed a city and guilds foundation course in science based industries.8 distinctions 2 credits.

Joined the Army in 1984 as a Metalsmith with the royal electrical and mechanical engineers. Left the army in 1988 as a lance corporal.

worked for various Engineering companies as a welder and worked at Aberthaw power station and port Talbot steel works.

then I joined the council as a lifeguard became a Supervisor and later becoming a trainer assessor, to train lifeguards and run lifeguard NPLQ courses.

Left the council to do security work which took me all over the country working for companies like minimal risk and total care security.

I then started my own man and van business where I am currently looking to close the business down and take another direction.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person?

I am patient, understanding, I respect privacy, I am very dependable and punctual, and I have a lot of personal experience in my life with disabilities,

I know the difference that helping someone can make, it gives them a sense of well being, independence and achievement. when I see the difference this makes to an individual it gives me a real sense of happiness,

my personal experiences with family are listed below.

My son has special needs, he has global developmental delay, autism, adhd, odd, he is severely sight impaired and he is wonderful.

My brother has Tourette syndrome and Bipolar disorder.

My father in-law had a sever stroke, I used to help him with his needs and then when he had to go into a home I would take him out on a regular basis to lift his spirt. Sadly he has now passed away.

My mum in-law has had two severe bleeds on the brain. I have seen the changes a brain injury makes on a person physically, emotionally, and neurologically. She is now in a specialist nursing home with 24 hour one to one care. We visit regularly and take her out when she is up to it.

My dad has COPD and I help him to get about.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person?

I can help an individual become more independent and happy by giving them the time, patience and encouragement they need to do what they would like in their life.

To take them out and give them new experiences to enrich their life

To help someone to achieve their everyday tasks.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you?

I want to help someone have a good quality of life, and as mentioned above I have seen the difference that this can make.

I believe that becoming a PA will give me a greater sense of well being and also enable me to spend more time with my family.

What are your hobbies/interests?

I enjoy fitness and walking my dogs.

Spending time with my family is very important to me.

I enjoy gardening and have just acquired an allotment which is very overgrown and I am looking forward to the challenge of clearing and preparing the soil to grow veg.
