Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job. *: I have recently graduated from university with a degree in childhood development with psychology plus. My degree has opened many opportunities and enhanced my knowledge in many areas - specifically special needs through the module of neurodiversity. Besides my understanding of autism, I have also participated in placement hours provided by the university ran autism and behaviour clinic. There I was in an environment with children on all areas of the autistic spectrum and those with ADHD and other disabilities relating to neurodiversity. During my placement hours, I worked with children who just needed some extra support to complete tasks to those who were non-verbal and needed a lot of support an assistance, therefore I have an understanding of most aspects of autism and how it impacts a child’s day to day life.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? *: One of the most important qualities when working with children with additional needs would be to treat them no different to any other child - with or without a disability. I have an elder brother with cerebral palsy and have seen how the over-attentiveness can sometimes be frustrating. However, it is also important to not forget that the child has additional needs and would often need support and guidance more frequently than other children so it’s crucial to understand the cues for support when needed. Besides that, I think it’s vital to be punctual, compassionate and friendly, and to also be a companion for the child to rely on to get into the community or relax around while at home.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? *: I currently work as a PA with another young person so I am experienced in building relationships with children who may be quiet or take some time to get used to being around. In addition to that, I would say that I am a friendly and approachable person who is easy to get along with and will enjoy playing Lego and getting messy with arts and crafts. I am also reliable, organised and always on time.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you? *: PA work is ideal for me as it is flexible and extremely rewarding. I have always found it inspiring to work with young children and see them develop new and existing skills. I also understand and can relate to how beneficial it is to families to have that support for their child and to be able recharge from the challenges it brings to support and raise a child with complex needs.

What are your hobbies/interests?: I am a keen crafter who loves making things. At the moment I have my own small business where I make personalised gifts and crafts so I am all for playing with play-doh and creating new things. I also enjoy going to the cinema, eating out, baking and going to the gym or out for walks. I have also enjoyed going to the trampoline park with another client or my younger brother.
