Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job

I have a great deal of experience with children and young adults with disabilities, especially cerebral palsy. Besides my experience of having an elder brother that also has cerebral palsy, I have also experienced working in environments with children with all sorts of complex needs. Throughout my time studying at university, I participated in voluntary placement hours at the university run behaviour and autism clinic whereby there were children with many different needs - some, if not the majority were non- verbal so I am all too familiar with having to speak on someone else’s behalf. This experience also helped me to understand and get to know each individual at the centre and gain a relationship with them.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person?

First as foremost, it is essential that you are a friendly and approachable person that the individual can communicate confidently with you and gain trust. However, I also believe that it is important to understand the persons needs. In this circumstance, I believe I would be a great fit for the young personae PA. Not only am I trustworthy, friendly and approachable, I also have a great deal of knowledge of the disability in which the young boy has through my own upbringing with my brothers disability. I am aware that each person is effected by cerebral palsy in different ways, but above all, I know that children - especially young adults, want nothing more than to be independent and not be defined by their disability and are eager to get involved in everything that other children who are not affected by a physical disability are doing. Therefore, I can assist with these desires and support the young boy to express himself, but also know the boundaries and limitations.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person?

As mentioned above, I am more than familiar with the desire of children with disabilities to get their own independence. I believe I could help and support this by assisting and participating in activities in which the individual would love to do just like any other child such as trampolining (as mentioned on the job description). I also noticed that the young boy in question would need support in money management skills. I think I could help there as I have had to manage my own money as well as having experience of working voluntary in a local primary school where learning the value of money was something in the curriculum. Not only that, but having time away from family is another stretch for any young person to feel more independent and is vital for their development so by taking the child out and about, especially to places fun and enjoyable for the individual would be another vital step away from being dependent on his family.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you?

PA work has appealed to me for a long time. I have seen how young people and even adults need that break away from the family but also support at the same time so that they are in no immediate danger. I think it’s the idea of giving back to the community and being able to help young people - especially those with disabilities who are unable to get into the community themselves and being able to see them become stronger individuals and more independent

What are your hobbies/interests?

My hobbies include any physical activities. I thoroughly enjoy working out at the gym and walks with my dog in the evenings. I am also very creative and have my own crafts business on the side which is rewarding and very enjoyable. Other than that I like to cook and bake as well as shopping.
