Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job. *: For the past year, I have been working for Kumon. Kumon is a tutoring centre for maths and English. Within the past year of working there, I have spent time with many children with different disabilities and learning difficulties. I have used this as an opportunity to develop my interpersonal skills with different types of abilities, at the same time making sure to make the child feel welcomed and safe. I also have a younger brother, aged 15, who suffers with Aspergers. Throughout my life, I have spent time with him helping him to overcome many different obstacles in his life that many people take for granted, such as starting a new school, meeting new people, even sitting an exam. I sit with my brother often and just talk to him, making sure he’s safe and comfortable as he has certain tendencies to make himself unsafe. I have spent as much of my life as I can remember protecting my brother and making sure no harm comes to him.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? *: I feel as though patience and persistence is extremely important. It is always important to make sure not to rush anybody or make them feel anxious, or to do anything that means they won’t trust you. Persistence is also a key aspect, as you must always make sure you make the child feel safe and happy and that they can find safety in you, as it’s your job to protect them. Interpersonal skills are also very important, as you must be able to work with a wide range of people with a range of abilities to make sure that you connect with everyone. Being able to be gentle and take care in your work is also important, as nothing should be rushed and nobody should feel as though they’re in the way.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? *: I think that I would be able to change my abilities depending on what the child needs. I can be as involved as needed, and I can provide as much help as the child needs. I understand when they have had too much or when they feel overwhelmed, and I know when to back down. I feel as though this is very important as it will allow me and the child to build a trusting relationship towards each other.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you? *: Since I was a child, I always had an interest in helping people as much as I could. My mother worked in a care home for a few years, and I would always visit her and help out in the home whenever I could. When I started high school, I knew I wanted to pursue some kind of care in the future. As I began my GCSE’s, I realised I wanted to care for people as I did with my brother. People with disabilities, physical or mental. I want to do as much as I can to help any child reach their full potential, and do whatever I can for them to help them.

What are your hobbies/interests?: In my spare time, I really enjoy art and doing anything creative. I love to draw, paint, and colour. I like to relax by listening to some music and sitting alone with a book. I also enjoy just being with my family in their company, even if it’s just sitting in the family room with them while I do some art or reading.
