Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job I believe that I would be suitable for this job due to my excessive knowledge and experience in the support worker role. I started off my work in the care industry as a support worker in the supported living setting. During my time here I learnt about domestic duties but also this was my first experience with working with people who had learning disabilities and mobility issues. I worked with a 55 year old women which needed help with personal care including washing, toileting and food preparation. The lady that I worked with was a wheelchair user who needed relevant hoisting and transfers. After this I spent time in a specialist college in Barry called Beechwood College which was a SEN college for young adults. My time I spent there I learnt about how to use relevant tasks to push the limits of students with regards to their education. While there we did some community based activities including shopping using Makaton and such activities as swimming cycling and leisure activities. After this I moved to my current job which is in the council where I work as a community support worker. I work with various individuals who have autism and learning difficulties. In my current job we work to aim to engage the support people in the community and how to engage in local amenities. This includes swimming horse-riding, cycling shopping and accessing cinema and theatres.
What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? I believe to assist a supported person that you need to be open minded. That is because there may be some activities you get asked to do which may be new to you but you have to apply your values and experience onto that person. I also believe you need to be a caring person this is because you are going to be looking after that supported person and that family has trust in you to be a kind and caring person . As a person you also need to be trustable, attentive and punctual.
How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? I can contribute to a person's independence by promoting independence to them. I can do this by offering choice within boundaries and getting the person to choose this may be verbally or using communication aids such as makaton sign or communication tools. I will also ensure that when I am supporting a person that I give them full control of the day and let them do all tasks possible. This might be something like paying for a meal, choosing a meal or even both.
What is it about PA work which appeals to you? I currently work on the support worker industry and being able to further my knowledge and experience enables me to be able to be able to gain knowledge about the care industry. It appeals to me because I love working in the industry and I like to further people's independence and make a difference
What are your hobbies/interests? My personal hobbies include going to the gym, leisurely walks, shopping. I also have a love for movies films and theatre, this started from a love of Drama which I furthered into doing a GCSE and A level in drama.
