Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job

Although having not specifically undertaken a PA type job before, I believe the varied positions I have undertaken in my previous job roles have allowed me to deal with many different types of people. I have also learned a great deal on how to adapt and adjust to different circumstances at the drop of a hat, with the problem-solving aspects of building work and adapting to issues that arise being something I have always prided myself on.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person?

I believe the most important qualities are being reliable and patient, as a person requiring additional help in day-to-day life will need an assistant who can be relied upon to be there, and able to take time to assist with tasks as their ability decreases. This also means that the person would be able to do the activities they are used to doing, rather than being spoon-fed, maintaining their independence for as long a time as possible. I also believe that an ability to understand and be flexible with the person is very important, particularly with dementia, as mood and demeanour are particularly prone to change, which requires a delicate consistent and caring approach to tasks. Being outgoing is also a large factor, as tasks and activities would be made considerably easier by having a good rapport between an assistant and vulnerable person.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person?

I would be willing to take the time to assist in tasks, helping the person to complete daily tasks independently, as the advert stated that maintaining independence is important. I am also capable of adapting to mood changes and different lifestyle needs, as understanding that on some days the person may feel unable to complete as many tasks will require a sympathetic approach, whilst maintaining the ability to persuade the person to eat, drink and take any relevant medication. I am also very aware of the different aspects of living which are involved in dementia, and know that dealing with questions and situations which may potentially be surprising/upsetting to myself or other individuals could be an issue. I also believe being quite an active person, I would be able to assist in preventing unexpected accidents and falls, whilst being gentle and considerate in assisting if such an incident were to occur.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you?

The job of PA appeals as I have always wanted to help and assist people and enjoying creating good relationships with people of all ages and backgrounds. I also firmly believe that my personality would be greatly suited to this role as I have a good sense of humour, whilst also being able to create a caring and helpful environment, which would allow the person to maintain control, as I will be assisting, not managing their life.

What are your hobbies/interests?

My hobbies include playing in bands, as well as having a keen interest in many different varieties and genres of music. I am also very interested in many different types of films, and have an extensive knowledge and appreciation of both which extends well beyond my years. I am also an avid reader, and enjoy reading and discussing many different novels and poems.

I also enjoy gardening and light physical activity, which reading the advert is a shared interest.
