I confirm that I have the right to work in the UK and am able to prove my eligibility status when required to do so. *: Yes

Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job. *: 1984: 11 ‘O’ levels including English and Maths 1986: 3 ‘A’ levels – English, History and Sociology 1990 BA Hons 2:1 English and Social Policy at St David’s University College Lampeter 1994 Diploma in Social Work at University of Wales College Cardiff 2007 Graduate Diploma in Psychology at Bucks New University I hold current certificates in First Aid and Adult Safeguarding. I have worked in social care settings for over 30 years with a variety of client groups including adults and children with disabilities. I qualified as a social worker in 1994 and worked in social work settings until 2005. I then went back to University to study psychology and decided that I was happier in more practical ‘hands on’ roles. I worked as a learning support assistant with children with SEN for 5 years and as a self-employed childminder with Bucks Community Childminding Scheme for 5 years. I have been working for a company providing PA services to adults with a variety of additional needs since 2017. Examples of this work include: supporting an elderly gentleman with visual impairment and mobility difficulties to do his weekly shop, attend appointments and attend social events supporting a lady with mental health issues to access the community and attend appointments supporting clients with learning disabilities to manage their personal care, household tasks and budgeting. This role is now coming to an end as I have moved out of the area. I work part-time as a Floating Tenancy Support Worker with clients at risk of homelessness. This involves supporting clients to apply for and manage their benefits, deal with correspondence and develop budgeting skills.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? *: If I were looking for a PA for myself or a family member I would seek someone with the following qualities: Reliability and punctuality Energy and self-motivation An ability to plan time, problem-solve and take a practical approach An ability to listen, enjoy spending time with people and getting to know them, linked with an ability to empathise Honesty and an understanding of professional boundaries and responsibilities An understanding of and commitment to principles of equality of opportunity A desire to work to high standards A patient and cheerful disposition!

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? *: I try to see each person as an individual and to understand where they are coming from in terms of their experiences, their needs and the things they would like to achieve for themselves. I am respectful of the fact that I am working in someone’s home and often assisting them with personal issues, so I listen to what the client expects bearing in mind that they are the expert in their own situation. My role is to assist and support, not take over. I am also careful to ensure confidentiality is maintained with respect to my clients, within the framework of safeguarding responsibilities. I am mindful of health and safety both for myself and the client, and I will risk- assess activities in collaboration with the client and any other relevant professionals. I am quite a practical person and I enjoy problem-solving. If I feel I am lacking in skill or knowledge in a particular situation I will try to address this and find a way to make things work. I am happy to assist with all aspects of personal care as well as community activities and appointments. I am a car driver and owner, I have business insurance on my car. I drive a Golf SV which is tall and has lots of leg-room, chosen mainly because my dad who has mobility issues can get in and out easily and it has a big boot!

What is it about PA work which appeals to you? *: PA work appeals to me because it is a very practical way of making a difference to people’s lives while getting to know them well and developing a good relationship. My own parents and great-aunt are now elderly and they benefit hugely from having support to continue to live their day-to-day lives in their own homes and in a way that they are in control of. I see being a PA as a natural extension of using those skills for other people. It seems like the least intrusive means of providing support and letting people be in control of their own lives. I have found PA work to be very rewarding because it is practical yet tailored to the individual’s needs.

What are your hobbies/interests?: I am an avid reader, mostly fiction but I also enjoy history and biography. I love rock music and get to concerts when I can. I enjoy cinema, theatre and ballet: I love being back in Cardiff with all the opportunities to see productions and live screenings. I enjoy gardening. I enjoy cooking, I have been introduced to the recipes of Slimming World and am inspired by healthy ways of making old favourites. I go to the gym regularly if slightly reluctantly but enjoy it when I get there. I enjoy visiting stately homes and gardens, particularly if they have a good tea-room. I enjoy walks in parks, the seaside and the Bay and a stroll around town for window-shopping purposes.
