2017 - Current: Special Educational Needs Teacher
Woodlands High School

- I am a class teacher and teach pupils with a range of additional learning needs such as ASD, ADHD, SLD and Down Syndrome.

2016 - 2017: Primary School Teacher
Springwood Primary School

- I taught a Foundation Phase class within a primary setting.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person?

As a person who is working with a person with additional needs it is important that you are naturally a caring individual. From my own experience patience is key and giving the time to get to know and understand an individual is important. I feel that you can really build a relationship with someone through humour and imagination whilst maintaining clear boundaries.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person?

My current role as Class Teacher at Woodlands High School has allowed me to develop my skills set in many areas. I currently teach a mixed ability Year 7 class with a range of learning needs, including pupils with SLCD, ASD, ADHD and ESBD. To be able to cater for each individual need, I have had to undertake my own research to develop my own understanding and knowledge. For example, I have had to seek advice from professionals including ASD specialists with regards to a non-verbal ASD pupil.
I understand the importance of catering to and understanding individual needs and how important it is for young people to develop their independence.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you?

As my current role is a Teacher in a Special School I feel I could really put my skills, experience and knowledge to use in a role outside of the school setting. I feel it would be beneficial to me as a practitioner to develop my experience further as well as being able to have a positive effect on the life of a young person with ADHD and OCD. The particular role stood out to me as I currently work with a class of boys with a mixture of ADHD and ASD so I feel my skills and experience are suited to the job description.

What are your hobbies/interests?
