Personal Assistant

A LITTLE ABOUT MYSELF

I am a 10 year old boy, living with my parents and dog in Tonteg.  I attend a Special School nearby.  I have a diagnosis of ADHD and display some autistic traits, have complex learning difficulties and epilepsy.  I am an active, chatty young man with a good sense of humour who likes going out and about. I particularly love going to watch Cardiff Devils play ice hockey with my mum, playing football, playing with my Hot Wheels cars, gardening, going for bug hunts, long walks and bike rides.  I also love going to Subway or McDonald’s for a treat and going on the train / watching the trains at local stations.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

My mum is looking to employ someone to help me access social situations without my parents after school two afternoons as they both work full time.

PLACE OF WORK

You will collect me from school and take me out in the community (usually dropping me home on a Monday and meeting mum in a pre-arranged location, i.e. Nantgarw / Talbot Green / Pontypridd, Thursday).

HOURS OF WORK

5 hours per week. 3pm – 5pm, Monday.  3pm – 5.30pm / 6pm Thursday.

RATE OF PAY

£ 9.00 per hour and 35p per mile travel expenses.

TASKS CAN INCLUDE

  • Taking me to places in the community to play or do activities
  • Joining in these activities with me and encourage me to participate
  • Taking me on the train for local journeys / to watch the trains at the station
  • Taking me to Subway, McDonalds or local cafes and to look at the animals in the local petshop.
  • Being responsible for my safety and keeping me safe if I have a seizure (I take medication for epilepsy, but do sometimes have a seizure)
  • Supporting and encouraging me to develop life skills and my confidence
  • Encouraging me to do new activities

TYPE OF PERSON REQUIRED

  • A person who is dependable and arrives on time.
  • A person who respects the privacy and confidentiality of working in someone else’s home
  • Friendly and approachable
  • A car driver with own car – business class insurance required.
  • Someone patient and understanding but also assertive when needed to deal with challenges presented
  • A person who is able to work on their own initiative
  • Someone who is outgoing, energetic (able to keep up with Freddie) and likes to have fun
  • Someone who is flexible (very important)
  • Preferably you will have experience of working with children and have experience and confidence to deal with a child having a seizure

ABOUT THE JOB

Though a part-time job, this will be a proper job requiring a National Insurance number to be submitted. A probationary period of 6 months will be necessary in the first instance. The wage will be paid monthly on return of a payslip provided by the Centre for Independent Living. You will receive appropriate holidays and holiday pay. You must hold business class insurance on your car.

The post is subject to a satisfactory references and a DBS (Police) Check - which will need to be carried out before employment can commence. The cost of this will be met by the employer.

You will also be required to attend a Child Protection Training and any other relevant courses that are appropriate to this position (i.e. Epilepsy)
