Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job. *:  Although my employment history is varied, I feel that the experience I have gained suits the advertised job role in a number of ways. My current employment as a Learning Support Assistant, based at a specialist school in Penarth ( Ysgol-Y-Deri), involves me working in close contact with children and young adults that may have autism, physical disabilities and/or exhibit challenging behaviour. This requires me to maintain an annual ‘DBS Enhanced Check’ as well as a yearly renewal of registration with the ‘Welsh Education Workforce Council’. The job demands patience, empathy and the ability to adapt to the individual’s specific needs e.g. dietary requirements etc. I have also developed an understanding of ‘Safeguarding’ and practise this on a daily basis. Working in the school environment demands that I conform and adhere to the school’s policy and procedure guidelines in order to ensure the security and safety of pupils and staff. On a part time basis, I have one to one contact (circa 3 hours per week via Direct Payments), with a young teen that exhibits challenging behaviour. The job role is designed to give the parents rest-bite from the child, and vice versa. My job is to arrange and organise activities that either the parent or child has chosen for each session, and then I will be fully responsible for that child’s health and welfare during my time with them. Again, experience of Safeguarding is required to deal with challenging behaviour and some potentially difficult situations. I am also a mother of 3 children aged 14, 10 and 6.
What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? *: Essential qualities I believe are important in the role advertised are patience, empathy, understanding and the ability to adapt to the individual persons needs. I also pride myself on being responsible, punctual and honest.
How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? *: I like to focus on helping and encouraging the person to explore their interests and help them to achieve their own personal goals to the best of their ability. In turn, I would like to help to expand the persons experience of the world around them with a view to building their confidence and in turn, their independence.
What is it about PA work which appeals to you? *: I feel that the advertised job role suits my core strengths and I have found, through experience, that I excel in job roles that allow me to exhibit my caring and empathetic nature. I am very much a people person and I endeavour to help and support people in any way I can. I enjoy watching the children grow in confidence and develop their understanding of the world around them. I like to think that I have bonded with them and made a positive impact on their lives.
What are your hobbies/interests?: I love spending time with my family and friends. I’m a very homely person and really enjoy cooking for everyone. I have a big passion for baking. I enjoy expressing my creative nature and always looking for new arts and crafts skills to learn and practise with my children. I have a passion for ‘up-cycling’ old and abandoned furniture and I also enjoy learning new sewing and stitching skills and techniques as I am self taught. I like to think I keep a fair level of fitness with lots of dog walks as we like to explore new places. I am a NON-SMOKER.
