I am both patient and tactful. Having worked in the services industry for 20 years I have a good working knowledge of hygiene standards and basic health care. Throughout my working career I have trained, practiced and developed the ability to deal with people from different backgrounds. I am physically fit and have excellent stamina and strength. I have excellent communication skills combined with a desire to get along with and help people whenever possible. I am a good listener and have the ability to think on my feet and overcome different types of problems. Being a mother, over the years I have developed skills and techniques that allow me to identify and provide emotional support as and when required. On a daily basis, I interact and communicate with both the young and old. I am able to prioritise workloads and adapt to situations as they arise.
What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? *: I believe it is important to address a disabled person as an equal and if possible I would greet them openly and shake hands. When interacting with someone who has an illness or disability, I believe we should see that person for whom he or she is, and not what illness or disability that person has. I would use the same good manners in interacting with the person with an illness or a disability as I would with anyone else. I would make eye contact with them and be aware of my own body language at all times. I would not make any decisions for the person or assume that I know the persons preferences. I would not underestimate the abilities of a person with an illness or disability. Before offering assistance or doing something for the person, I would first ask if there was anything I could do or help with as helping before asking may offend the person.
How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? *: For the past 18 years I have been a hard working independent mother. I have the necessary life skills to allow me to be supportive, creative, caring, trustworthy and dependable. I am able to see beyond any physical disabilities and understand the demands placed upon parents and individuals alike. I believe I have the skills, determination and commitment to make my contribution to this role a successful one. I am able to work alone or as part of a team, I am eager to learn and would be pleased to make any positive contribution to enhance an individual’s life.
What is it about PA work which appeals to you? *: As a mother, I take great pride in watching my children grow and develop. Each day brings new challenges, goals, disappointments and achievements. I would love the opportunity to enhance an individual’s life so they too can appreciate and take advantage of all that is around them. I also understand the day to day pressures placed on parents or family and would hope that my interaction would at least offer some relief from the daily constraints of the person or family.
