Personal Assistant Application Form Submission

Title *: Miss.
Town *: Newport

I confirm that I have the right to work in the UK and am able to prove my eligibility status when required to do so. *: Yes

Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job. *: I have previous work experience as a personal assistant for a lady with learning disabilities. I provided social interaction enabling the individual to participate in activities within the community. I provided care within her home environment, assisting with cooking, cleaning, managing finances and personal care. I would organise and take the individual to various appointments and activities. I worked alongside various Health Care Professionals whilst in this role, and created a number of activities to support and encourage development, based on advice from the Health Care Professionals. I developed a strong working relationship with the lady I was assisting, which had a positive effect on various aspects of her development, such as her speech and emotional development - enabling me to understand when something was wrong, even if she was unable to express this. I have Health and Social Care GCSEs and A Levels – helping people has always been a passion of mine, and I believe my kind, caring, respectful nature, and open mindedness enabled me to thrive in this role previously. My mother has been a Personal Assistant/worked within care her whole life, and I believe this instilled my passion for this role from a very young age. Caring for people is second nature to me. I have also supported grandparents and other family members from a young age, providing help and support, and taking them to appointments etc. Providing help and support to individuals that require it is something that provides me with a lot of pleasure and satisfaction – nothing is too much as I would go above and beyond to help anybody.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? *: When working as a Personal Assistant with an individual with a disability, I think promoting independence and providing support, which is catered to the individual and their needs is of great importance. Ensuring the individuals voice is heard, whilst enabling/encouraging them to live a life they choose - promoting equality and diversity, whilst understanding the challenges individuals with disabilities face. Being reliable, trustworthy and caring are all qualities that I pride myself in, and believe are necessary for this role, along with being flexible and friendly. Having good communication, listening, and interpersonal skills is also very important in this role, enabling strong working relationships, whilst being empathetic and sympathetic towards situations. I believe having a good sense of humour, where necessary, and remaining open minded are all qualities that enable individuals to thrive in this role. Being organised, patient and remaining calm under pressure - being able to use initiative whilst ensuring safety and constant supervision are also qualities that are important when working as a personal assistant. I believe being passionate and a natural people person enable you to thrive in a role of this nature. All of which are qualities I pride myself in, and have built upon as a result of previous work experience.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? *: I believe I could contribute towards the needs and independence of an individual with a disability by encouraging them to have autonomy and control over their life (supporting them where necessary), making them feel empowered and valued. My strong interpersonal and good communication skills have previously helped me to build strong working relationships with individuals, enabling me to understand their needs and abilities – which could be transferred to this role. Understanding and respecting individual care needs, and providing adequate care and support would enable me to contribute towards the needs of a person living with a disability in their daily life. Providing choices and the tools for them to live independently, and maintain this level of independence would be extremely important. This could be achieved by understanding when help/support is required, and when something can be done independently. Maintaining independence requires individuals to be happy, healthy and self-confident within their surroundings – enabling them to thrive. Therefore, I believe I could contribute towards the needs and independence of an individual with a disability by building a strong, working relationship with them and understanding and respecting their individual care needs. Promoting independence and self-confidence and working alongside them to enable them to live independently, contributing towards meeting their needs, whilst promoting their independence.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you? *: For me, PA work isnt just a job, it is a vocation - when I was previously in this role, I gained deep satisfaction and fulfilment from this role. As previously stated, I am extremely passionate about helping individuals, which is demonstrated through my kind and caring nature. I will continuously give 100% and go above and beyond to build a strong working relationship with the individual I am supporting, and their family, to ensure safety, constant supervision, and to meet the individual needs of the individual, enabling them to thrive and feel empowered. I am professional, conscientious and a highly-organised person, who has a passion for my work, taking the responsibility of my role seriously, continuously providing the upmost care and support. Therefore, all aspects of PA work appeal to me because it enables me to provide care, support and independence to individuals that require it, enabling them to live independently, whilst encouraging them to feel empowered and valued within society. Knowing that I have helped somebody and had a positive impact on their day is something that provides me with great pleasure, and is one of the many reasons why the role of a PA appeals to me. I am also a team player and previously worked with a number of other PA’s to ensure the individual we provided assistance to thrived and her best interests were at heart.
