Part-Time Personal Assistant

A LITTLE ABOUT MYSELF

I am an older lady with Vascular Dementia. I live with my husband in Godreaman, Aberdare. I was due to have a hip replacement which didn’t go ahead so I continue to have mobility issues and need to use a walking stick to aid me.

I am sociable and chatty, and am very artistic too. I enjoy 60’s music and singing, especially Songs of Praise.

I still want to go out sometimes and participate in daily activities such as shopping, out for cup of tea or walks around the local area. I prefer places that are peaceful and quiet and tend avoid the more busy places. 

 

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

You will provide respite for my husband who is my main carer. You will support me both inside and outside the home to give him a short break.

HOURS OF WORK

9 hours per week

Saturday for social outings in the day

Wednesday evenings for a home sit

Flexibility is essential should these days need to change

RATES OF PAY

£11.00 per hour

40p mileage when you use your car

TASKS WILL INCLUDE

• I require constant supervision; ensuring my well-being and safety at all times
• Preparing light meals for me at home
• Ensuring I maintain a good diet by prompting me to eat and drink what is given to me
• Taking me out to quiet places, for example to a tea room or for an ice-cream
• On occasion my husband will join us for an outing
• Engaging me in conversation
• Enjoying a cup of tea with me at home
• Ensuring I am using my stick when we are out walking. If not you will remind me to use it

TYPE OF PERSON REQUIRED

• You must have a confident and direct approach in communication
• You’ll be able to lead and initiate conversations, actively keeping me engaged
• Be able to give reassurance and guidance when needed
• Proactive in situations and be able to problem solve on your own initiative
• Patience is essential
• Experience with dementia is preferred, either personal or work-related
• You must be flexible, understanding that shifts, days and times may change with short notice
• A car owner/driver who is willing to use car for work purposes/take me on outings

 

 ABOUT THE JOB

Although this is a part-time job, it will be a proper job requiring a National Insurance number to be submitted. A trial period will be necessary in the first instance. The salary will be paid on a monthly basis and appropriate holiday pay given (5.6 weeks pro rata).

The post is subject to a probationary period and a DBS (Police) Check at no cost to you. You will have to supply 2 references, one of which should be able to comment on your work practices.
