Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job

I have 24 years of care experience. 18 of these years I worked for Merthyr Tydfil Council doing home care. During this time I also worked as a private carer for 5 years with a lovely lady that in the end I called my friend . After this, I worked in a residential home as a carer and currently work as a support worker in an assisted living home. I think all my experience over the years would make me the perfect candidate for this role. I also have experience of working with many disabilities and illnesses, including but not limited to, dementia, cerebral palsy, MS, diabetes, learning disabilities and people with short term memory loss.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person?

I think that patience is a vital quality to have when working with a disabled person because they might need chance to do things themselves in their own way or they may take a while longer to communicate their needs. Respect and confidentiality are very important in order to promote their dignity and their choices. I also think having empathy is important as they may face daily challenges on a personal level that a support worker would need to acknowledge, understand and then act on to assist. I believe being honest, trustworthy and reliable helps to build great relationships, especially when working in somebody's own home. Having a sense of humour is a so important when working as a personal assistant. I honestly believe that laughter can be the best medicine.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person?

I can contribute by assisting with personal care. I have done this over many years and I am completely comfortable in doing so, while at the same time, promoting their independence and giving choices but also maintaining the person's full dignity and respect. Promoting independence is good for the person's self esteem, even if it's only small tasks that they can accomplish. I can assist with any domestic tasks around the house that are needed and provide assistance with meal preparation. I have my own car so assisting with tasks outside of the home would be no problem at all. I have assisted people with wheelchairs and walking frames so have experience in this. I can also contribute to the needs and independence of a disabled person by prompting and supporting them to take medication if needed. I am able to use MAR sheets and have previously attended medication courses.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you?

The main thing that appeals to me about PA work is being able to work on a one to one basis. I love being able to build great rapport and relationships with people I work with, so they feel safe, secure and comfortable. I love being able to enhance the quality of their life and see the outcome.

What are your hobbies/interests?

I love spending time with my family, friendse andamy dog, especially time spent with my granddaughter. I enjoy doing crafts and crocheting. I like going to the cinema and theatre to see shows, musicals are my favourite. I enjoy doing ancestry and finding out more about my family history. I like going out for meals with loved ones and popping for coffees whilst shopping.
