Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job. (required): I graduated Cardiff University in 2025 with a 2:1 Psychology degree (BSc). My education has given me the foundation to understand the importance of individual differences, behaviour and behavioural management as well as applying a person centred approach in care and support for individuals with different needs. Although I do not hold a driving licence, I am confident and experienced using public transport and I have no concerns navigating Cardiff and the surrounding areas. As the young man prefers to use public transport I feel this is a natural fit. Additionally, I currently am a Teaching Assistant in a specialist school for young people on the autism spectrum who are not able to access mainstream education. In this role I work both one-to-one and with a class who have complex needs by supporting them to engage with activities, build confidence, and access their surrounding communities. I regularly accompany young people on community outings such was walks, ensuring they are safe while encouraging their independence and personal choice at all times. This role has given me practical experience of building a trusting rapport and professional relationships with individuals who require tailored, person-centred care. I am calm under pressure, adaptable, and always led by the needs and preferences of the person I am supporting — qualities I would bring directly to this PA role. As a Teaching Assistant I have a cleared DBS check and a EWC license as well as being trained in Safeguarding procedures.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? (required): I think one of the most important qualities that are most important in supporting a disabled individual is reliability. It would be my responsibility to build upon my consistency so week after week there’s no disappointment in the care and support given to their individual needs are met. Additionally, having compassion through active listening is very important so the individual feels heard and actions are put into place to support their needs and wants. Respect for dignity and autonomy is something I feel strongly about. My role is to support someone to live the life they choose, independently as possible. This also means maintaining a non-judgmental attitude in all situations, particularly when out in the community. It would be my role to support them and assist them in their own chosen activities. Finally, adaptability is essential. Every moment can be different and having the ability to read a situation and adjust your approach both calmly and flexibly is what makes support feel natural rather than staged and rigid.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? (required): In my current role as a Teaching Assistant at a specialist autism school, I regularly support young people to access their local communities independently. This involves helping the teacher plan outings managing risks for individual students. Therefore I am experienced in assessing risk while ensuring the young person remains in control of their independence. I follow the lead of the individual I support, adapting to their preferences and pace while keeping them and the class safe. I am comfortable working without direct supervision and take personal responsibility for the wellbeing of those in my care no matter how the situation may change. It’s important to be adaptable and empathetic in each moment of support. Additionally, I am a friendly and positive individual dedicated to providing care and support to young people and young adults by helping them maintain their uniqueness, independence and dignity, whether that be through education or care.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you? (required): As stated, I am passionate about supporting people to live independently as possible leading their own lives to their truest happiness and fulfilment. Everyone deserves the decency of choice and control to engage in activities they enjoy, and I want a practical role in helping individuals make that happen for themselves, no matter their ability or circumstances. The activities involved (walking, cinema, swimming, bowling are things I truly enjoy myself, so I can bring genuine enthusiasm to every outing. Especially when it comes to a good cup of tea and a chat! I find this kind of one-to-one, community-based support deeply rewarding and truthfully it is a natural extension of the work I do daily.

What are your hobbies/interests? (required): My hobbies include walks in nature, watching movies and TV (including the Cinema!), socialising, fun games, reading, music, cooking and shopping! Many of my hobbies seem to work well with the preferred activities described in this role. I am confident out in the community and bring positivity and enthusiasm to everything I do. My passion for supporting people with additional needs is because I find it incredibly rewarding, which is reflected in the work I do every day in my current role.
