Personal Assistant Application Form Submission

Where did you hear about our PA vacancies? (required): Job Centre

I confirm that I have the right to work in the UK and am able to prove my eligibility status when required to do so. (required): Yes

Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job. (required): I have no formal experience working with disabled people, however I have a life full of personal experience. My older sister has Cerebral Palsy as well as a few other disabilities, and my brother has Autism and Global Delay. My close friends also have physical disabilities including fibromyalgia and brain injuries so I often help them with tasks in day to day life such as cooking, cleaning, pushing their wheelchairs (manual and electric), sending mail, and going to the shops. I saw that you use a hoist while I dont have much experience with them I have access to both a portable hoist and a ceiling hoist so would be more than able to practice before starting. Id also be willing to undertake any training you request/require. As you mentioned a bit about yourself I thought it would be fair to share a bit about me. Im also quite an adventurous eater, always trying new recipes. However, like yourself Im not fond of spicy food. However, due to my autism I can get in a cycle of eating the same food. I love reading too, however Im keener on non fiction. My current big interest is British superstitions in the 19th and early 20th century. The music I listen to is quite all over the place, usually just whatever songs I hear online or something my friends recommend. Im quite a big Renée Rapp fan, and was a huge One Direction fan back in the day so Im familiar with Niall Horan.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? (required): - Advocating for the person without speaking over them. A personal example when a bus driver attempted to refuse my friend due to their wheelchair. We quickly non verbally communicated to let me know that they wished to handle to confrontation. Then later on I offered to complain formally to the company as I knew they struggled with phone calls. Only after I got their consent did I complain, and I ensured they read all communications and made any edits they requested. - Ensuring they have as much independence as whats reasonable/possible. This includes understanding and accepting that even if you dont agree with a choice theyre making that its not your place to attempt to stop them. This of course does vary depending on mental capacity. - Understanding not just the disability but how it effects the person as rarely is ones experience with a disability similar to anothers. - Ensuring the person feels defined by their personal attributes, not their disability. - Strong initiative to ensure that youre ready to meet the needs without being asked/inconveniencing the person. Additionally, because its important that the person can trust you to be there for them. - Dedicating time to researching their disability to ensure it doesnt fall on the person youre assisting to need to explain everything. - Being certain that even on my worst days that I will be fully present for them

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? (required): Due to my siblings having extremely limited communication ability I grew up learning to pay attention to both verbal and non verbal indicators to ensure that their needs were met. I found those around me, such as my parents, didnt pay as much attention to these things so Ive often found myself advocating for my siblings when I saw wants/needs were not being met. In present day I still regularly do this, now with the social workers and the staff at their residential homes. Im also very lucky to have friends that spend the time educating me about their disability, and how to advocate for them correctly. This has led me to be much more able to advocate for them when they ask me to. For example, asking people to move their cars that are illegally blocking access to pavements/ramps, phoning TFW regarding the lifts being continuously out of order at the station with no warning on the app, and talking to staff at shops to gets them additional accommodations. In university I took extra modules on disability education, to become better educated on disability law and the casual discrimination they face regularly that can have serious impacts on their lives so Im able to fight against it on behalf of my loved ones. While I dont have a drivers license I am confident with public transport with someone in a wheelchair in Whitchurch, as my close friend that uses a manual chair lived in that area until recently. I also live close by so know all the local routes.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you? (required): I naturally enjoy helping people I find that Im offering help/assistance those around me often. I find it gives me purpose seeing the impact of my work in real time. Additionally, I enjoy having a job with routine, that can still strongly vary day to day. Also having variety in the type of tasks I do is strongly suited for me. Lastly, Im quite an upbeat and chatty person so a less formal environment where I can get to know the person Im working with is also appealing.
