Please read the Job Description carefully before providing information in this Section of the Application Form. Give details of your previous employment or experience which you think would help you to do this job. (required): I have 6 years of experience working as a teaching assistant in a school for pupils with additional needs. This role developed my understanding of the differing needs that individuals may have, and taught me how to adapt my communication and approach to make sure that people I was working with always felt safe, happy and respected. This experience would help me in these roles, as I am able to deliver person-centred, needs-based support.

What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? (required): It is very important to be patient and understanding, and to be able to communicate in the way that best fits an individuals needs. It is also very important to be able to maintain boundaries and to manage the balance between fun activities and being the responsible person who is there to keep someone safe. It is important to know when to be enthusiastic and outgoing, as people may be shy when meeting their personal assistant for the first time. It is also very important to be a good listener, to make sure that the needs, interests and goals of the person I am working with are prioritised, It is also incredibly important to be respectful of the persons independence and act as someone who is there to help and support, rather than to take over. Finally, it is very important to be reliable, as this will help the person I am working with and their wider circle to trust me. Being reliable would also help to build positive relationships with the person I am working with, and allow for overall better support and better outcomes with the individual.

How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? (required): First of all, I would ensure that the person I am supporting feels comfortable with me, and make sure that I establish the best style of communication that works best for them. I would ensure that I prioritise open communication to make sure that the person I am supporting feels confident and safe to tell me any issues or needs they may have. I would also use the skills that I developed in my work as an ALN teaching assistant to identify any other needs or issues that may arise, and work with the individual to create a plan or set of strategies that we can both use to respond safely and successfully to these needs. Through establishing this open communication I would also aim to contribute positively to the individuals independence, as this communication and the trust built alongside it would encourage the sharing of interests, targets or goals. I would hope to create an environment in which people would feel comfortable to try things independently, knowing that I am there if they need me but giving people the space to try new activities on their own. I would also make sure that I am always using a client-led style of support, ensuring that the person that I am supporting is choosing their plan and activity for the day, and support them to be able to do this. I would remain non-judgemental and open, and make sure that the interests of the person I am supporting are prioritised.

What is it about PA work which appeals to you? (required): I really enjoy working with children and young people, as I find it both interesting and rewarding. The opportunity to work on a one to one basis with a disabled person really appeals to me, as I enjoy meeting new people and getting to know what their individual interests and goals are. To be able to work with them to ensure that they can access and enjoy activities, and to help someone to become more independent and reach their goals would be incredibly rewarding for me. I am a patient, reliable and enthusiastic person, and I have a developed understanding of the barriers that disabled people, especially children, can face. I would really enjoy and value being able to work alongside a disabled person to support them to build skills and enjoy things that are important to them.

What are your hobbies/interests? (required): I really enjoy sports and have played a wide range of sports including football, badminton, tennis and golf. I also enjoy watching sports and learning more about the games. I am interested in the sci-fi genre, and frequently watch sci-fi movies and television shows. I also really enjoy being outdoors, for example going for walks and visiting the beach.
