(required): As a teenager I volunteered to run craft sessions for residents at a local home for individuals with learning difficulties and as a carer in a nursing home for the elderly. After 6th form college I worked at a day center for adults with physical and learning disabilities, assisting with personal care, feeding and social activities. This led me to train in my present role as a Visual Rehabilitation Specialist. I have been qualified for 31yrs and presently work part time in Social Services in the Vales. I visit, assess and support/ train individual with a range of sight levels and health/physical needs. I teach and encourage independence skills around daily living, communications and mobility skills needs connected to sight loss, often adapting teaching style to the ability of the individual. I have reasonable IT skills, using a computer at work and at home. I have a car, and a clean driving licence. I am married, with one child a son at university. I am in my mid 50s. What qualities do you think are important when working as a personal assistant with a disabled person? (required): I would expect a personal assistant to be reliable, friendly, patient, good at time keeping and adaptable. They would need good organisational & people skills and an interest in helping others. Shares interests, a sense of humour and to be respectful of working in an individual’s home are important in creating a good working relationship. To follow wishes of employer and maintain confidentiality. I am aware of the need to keep individuals safe and used to supporting those with limited mobility. How do you think you can contribute towards the needs and the independence of a disabled person? (required): I am used to encouraging independence skills in my main job, and making this appropriate to all ranges of physical in intellectual ability. I find it a privilege meeting individuals in their own homes and learning about them as a person. If individuals wish I am used to working alongside their families/ carers to help them get the most from support. I have previously worked as a carer and found it very rewarding. What is it about PA work which appeals to you? (required): I enjoy working with individuals and helping people. I see the benefit on Direct Payment support in my main job and like the way it enables the person wanting support to control their care. I like the support and structure it gives to the personal assist also. Independence and equality of people with disabilities is important to me. I need some extra income, so to be honest the financial aspect also. What are your hobbies/interests? (required): I enjoy nature and animals, I have my own dog. I enjoy cooking, reading and craft work, particularly embroidery. I sing in a choir and enjoy all forms of music. I enjoy the cinema, theatre and eating out with friends. I have recently re taken up country dancing. I am actively involved with my local church and for the last 6 years have volunteered teaching sewing skills to asylum seekers and refugees. I swim, play badminton and bowl, but my main keep fit is walking. Would you consider a casual position if you are unsuccessful with this job?
